We’ve all read stories about surprise bills, but what about a surprise pension?
76 year-old Peter Williams didn’t win the lottery, but he did walk into a £133,000 windfall. As reported by FtAdviser, Responsible Life adviser Graeme Donegani discovered that Williams had an unclaimed state pension. While the retiree had originally come to Donegani to release equity from his home, the news of his untapped pension left him with feelings of “‘elation.'”
So why did Williams not know about his pension? While he had filed the pertinent paperwork, he believed he “was not eligible” after getting no word back from the government. Donegani helped Williams discover that he did indeed have a state pension, and would not have to release equity after all.
Responsible Life Managing Director Steve Wilkie stated, “‘It just goes to show all retirees need to make sure what their entitlements are, and if you make enquiries with the tax office no news isn’t necessarily bad news.'”
The £133,000 is a big win for Williams, and Responsible Life as well.
